A Day in the Life at the Mary Schwartz Summit
May 8, 2025 | Mary Schwartz Summit
At the Mary Schwartz Summit, every day is thoughtfully designed to support wellness, independence, and community. Nestled in the heart of Seattle, our vibrant living community offers the support you need to thrive, from independent living to assisted living and memory support. But what truly sets it apart? The people, the experiences, and the sense of belonging.
Here’s what a typical day might look like for residents—filled with opportunities to move, connect, reflect, and thrive.
Morning: movement, mindfulness, and meaning
Mornings at The Summit begin with choice. For some, it’s a peaceful moment enjoying coffee and the view from their private apartment. For others, it’s a cheerful “good morning” from a caregiver helping them get ready with grooming and dressing with compassion and dignity.
Afterward, breakfast awaits. Whether eating in the dining room or enjoying your meal in-room, fresh ingredients and special diet accommodations are always on the menu. It’s a moment to set a positive tone for the rest of the day.
Then, wellness is on the calendar. Residents might choose a whole-body stretching class, core and posture training, or a fall-prevention session—each led by instructors who specialize in senior fitness. Prefer a gentler start? For those in assisted living or memory support, light therapy in the activity center offers warmth and a sense of calm, while seated yoga sessions in the library provide restorative energy.
Midday: community, connection, and care
As the day unfolds, there’s something for every interest and ability. Residents might join a knitting group in the library, take part in tech support drop-in hours, or stretch their minds with crossword puzzles and language classes like Yiddish with Wendy or Sephardic culture discussions. Memory support residents receive specialized activities, like sensory-stimulating or music-based activities.
Lunch is another chance to gather. The Summit’s dedication to kosher dining and culinary excellence ensures that each meal is both nourishing and respectful of tradition. In fact, our approach to nutrition feeds the body and soul for comfort, pleasure, and connection. And the rotating menu—from salmon with dill sauce to vegetarian lasagna— keeps the taste buds happy while the conversation buzzes.
The afternoon is a perfect time for healthcare and wellness check-ins from the nursing team or physical therapist and ensures seamless transitions between care levels. Residents are also invited to enjoy fun activities like a beading class in the third-floor art studio, joining rehearsals for a community musical, or attending special events like an Israel Independence Day celebration featuring live music by the Josh Niehaus Band. Or, if preferred, residents can have a quiet afternoon reading in the library, spending time in fourth-floor terrace garden, or visiting with family in-person or online.
Evening: entertainment, reflection, and calm
Evenings at The Summit are filled with warmth and joy. Dinner is an elegant yet cozy affair with meals designed by Executive Chef Jeremy Duitch, who has been with The Summit since before it even opened its doors.
Some residents might head to the activity center for a concert by the Seattle Jewish Chorale, watch a comedy film or Netflix documentary, or engage in thoughtful dialogue at the current events discussion group—where everyone is encouraged to bring their own article or topic. Those in memory care receive calming activities and gentle routines for winding down.
As the day ends, it’s a time to reflect, celebrate, and feel the strong sense of community that defines life at The Summit.
Outings and special moments
Whether it’s a scenic stroll to a local café or an afternoon exploring the Chihuly Museum of Glass, outings are planned with accessibility and enjoyment in mind. Info on each trip is clearly marked with guidance on mobility levels, so every resident can feel confident participating.
Celebrations are part of the heartbeat of this community. From birthdays, bar and bat mitzvahs, to Celebrations of Life honoring longtime friends, The Summit recognizes that life’s milestones—big and small—deserve to be shared.
