Coping with Caregiver Burnout
June 17, 2021 | General, Health & Wellness
Being a caregiver for a loved one is an incredibly thoughtful and rewarding experience, but it is no small task. Caregivers face an array of challenges and are frequently so busy caring for others they neglect their own physical and mental health, leading to a state of burnout.
Caregiver burnout is the direct result of the laborious tasks one takes on when caring for their loved ones. It frequently happens when people don’t get the help they need and may show up in many forms, such as anxiety and depression, irritability or mood swings, and changes in patterns like sleep and eating.
It is critical for caretakers to learn about the symptoms of burnout and take steps to prevent it whenever possible. Here are a few tips:
- Set healthy boundaries: Know your limits and needs and communicate them to those around you.
- Leverage your time and energy: Find a space to feel like you are not “on duty.” Try using local rideshare services (for rides to and from appointments) or ask other family members to step in periodically.
- Find a support network: There are many people dealing with burnout who can help you find ways to manage stress.
- Seek professional counseling: This is truly an act of self-love.
- Maintain a life outside of the role of caretaker: Stay in touch with friends, do activities that bring you joy, and stay healthy by exercising routinely and eating well.
