Generations of Love: Mother’s Day at Kline Galland
April 17, 2025 | Community Based Services, Events, Other News
Mother’s Day serves as a reminder of the lasting impact from the women who shape our lives. For many people in the Kline Galland community, it’s not only a time for flowers and memories, but a moment to be present with the women who mean the most.
In preparation for our Mother’s Day Celebration, we’re honored to share the voices of two women—Elaine Goldstein and Denise Bennett, who both have unique and personal experiences in our community. Their stories speak to the intergenerational love and connection, the strength of community and the special moments that happen within our walls.
Both Elaine and Denise reflect on memories with their mothers—who are now both 95—with deep admiration.
A Lifelong Connection: Elaine Goldstein’s Story
Elaine Goldstein’s history and connection with Kline Galland goes back to her childhood. She lived in Seward Park as a young child, volunteered at the Kline Galland Home as a teenager, and recalls the importance that Kline Galland holds as an institution within the community. “The Kline has always been part of our family.”
That connection has only grown over time. From her grandfather’s stay when she was in her early 20s, to the long-standing tradition of family performances by her mother, Kathie, and now with her mother living at the Mary Schwartz Summit, Kline Galland has always been more than a senior care facility — it’s been an extension of her family home.
“We’ve gotten to know her better in the last ten years,” Elaine shares. “When our dad’s health started to decline, we needed to be there more — and we were. That time together, especially now, is a gift. I’m so lucky to have the best sister [Linda] in the world, and we’ve shared so much with our mom together in these years.”
Trust, Comfort, and Care: Denise Bennett’s Journey
For Denise Bennett, the relationship with Kline Galland began through family friends using Kline Galland services in the 90s. Over time, it became deeply personal. Both her parents and in-laws used services from independent living and rehab to long-term care and hospice. Denise’s close relationship with her mother, Joan, made her anxious to be away from her, but her trust in the care at Kline Galland made the whole process easier. “After she fell, it was difficult for me to be away from her, but knowing she’s cared for has brought me a sense of peace.”
“She doesn’t let her age get to her,” Denise says of her mom. “She has a positive outlook on life and truly doesn’t act her age.” Despite aging and health challenges, her mother continues to find joy at Kline Galland Home. “Everyone on her care team calls her ‘mama.’ She feels so loved, which is a huge comfort when we can’t always be there.”
For Elaine, quality time with her mother has taken on a new meaning. “My favorite thing is sitting in the cafe with my mom, just having coffee,” she says. “Oftentimes other residents join us—some of them I have known since I was a child. There’s so much connection and reminiscing.”
Mother’s Day, Made Sacred
For both women, Mother’s Day has always been meaningful, but now it feels even more sacred.
“We’ve always gone all out,” Elaine shares. “But now that time together feels more precious. We don’t take big trips around Mother’s Day because being here — being together — matters more.”
For Denise, the meaning of the day is reflected in the woman who shaped her life. It’s not just about celebrating motherhood but honoring the legacy of love that continues across generations.
“Her outlook on life has shaped so much of who we are,” Denise says. “She’s always looked at life with the glass overflowing. That kind of positivity is something her children and my children carry on. She’s given us unconditional love our entire lives, and now it’s our turn to reflect that back.”
Give the Gift of Love and Dignity
At Kline Galland, we believe every mother — every elder — deserves to be surrounded by dignity, love, and community. Your donation helps make that possible.
Your donation to Mother’s Day is not just supporting housing or care — you’re giving someone the chance to sing, to connect, to sit in the café with their daughter, and to feel cherished.
