Reflecting on Legacy: The Power of Your Story
September 29, 2026 | General, Giving at Kline Galland, Resources

When we think about the footprint we leave behind, we often think of the physical items we pass on, yet the things that stay with us, and with those we love, are rarely material.
A true legacy lives in the values we carry forward and the traditions we preserve. It is reflected in the ways we show up for our families, our neighbors, and our communities. Taking time to reflect on our history gives us an opportunity to consider what has shaped us and what we want to carry on.
Reflecting on what has shaped you
To help you reflect on your life’s story, consider these questions that focus on your memories, lessons, traditions, and experiences.
Try journaling or sharing a conversation about the following questions:
- What is one story from your life that your family still loves to hear?
- What core values did a parent, grandparent, or mentor pass down?
- What routine, recipe, or tradition do you hope continues for generations?
- What local cause or community program has brought you feelings of fulfillment?
Focusing on the people around you
The greatest legacies are found in the lives we touch rather than the things we own. Building that story doesn’t begin at the end of life; it’s actively created in our day-to-day.
One way people may choose to continue living their values is through supporting the causes and places that matter most to them.
Connecting your values to the future
Philanthropy has a specific opportunity to keep your values working for the causes you care about. It’s called planned giving. Beyond simply a traditional will or bank account, a gift might involve:
- redirecting an unused life insurance policy
- an IRA distribution
- a gift of stock toward the mission you believe in
Inspired by history and driven by values, Caroline Kline Galland bequeathed $1M to establish a Jewish nursing home on the shores of Lake Washington. We invite like-minded supporters who share her vision of honoring the elderly to do the same. At Kline Galland, our Caroline Legacy Society allows you to make a bequest or planned gift, helping us ensure we can honor our commitment to care for seniors and their families, no matter what future challenges we face.
Potential gift types might include:
Restricted Bequests: A gift made for a particular usage to meet a specific charitable objective
Blended Gifts: A future commitment combined with a current gift, providing a flexible option to give while achieving your personal philanthropic plans
You may also designate Kline Galland to receive:
- A specific dollar amount
- A percentage of your estate
- A specific piece of real estate or personal property
You may be tired of being at the mercy of fluctuating stock and real estate models. Learn how to receive fixed income payments for life with tax-free benefits and avoid or reduce capital gains tax. A charitable gift annuity offered by Kline Galland can also be funded with your retirement accounts.
By joining the Caroline Legacy Society, you are not only investing in the strength of Kline Galland’s mission, but also joining a community of generous, like-minded supporters who share a vision to honor life through all stages.
If you’re considering including Kline Galland in your planned giving, please contact our chief philanthropy officer, Nate Nusbaum at NateN@klinegalland.org or (206) 456-9702.
