Q&A with Dr. Gillum
In your opinion, what makes Kline Galland’s approach to hospice stand out amongst other hospice providers in the region?
Dr. Gillum: I met Kline Galland Hospice first as a daughter with a terminally ill parent, not as a doctor, so I know our hospice care stands out because I experienced it with my family.
Our Kline Galland Hospice team works to really meet patients and families where they are at in their unique journey. It’s a true interdisciplinary team including nursing, social workers, chaplains, occupational therapists, massage therapists, music therapists, bereavement services, and a robust volunteer program. Kline Galland Hospice provides whole person, whole family care.
I am humbled daily by the thoughtful, collaborative care that my colleagues provide.
What is something that patients and families exploring or experiencing hospice treatment should keep in mind?
Dr. Gillum: I have two thoughts I’d like to offer:
- You and your loved ones are crucial members of the team, so we always want to know your thoughts, ideas, worries, and questions.
- Our goal in hospice is to do what we can do to make every day as good as it can be. This process involves recommending things that might help and things to avoid. When a person is getting closer to the end of their life, some of the medications or treatments that may have helped them in the past can be less likely to help and more likely to harm, so our team might recommend changes.
What do you enjoy in your free time?
Dr. Gillum: I enjoy spending time outside, reading mystery novels and needle felting.
